Which are the legalities for Koh Samui weddings?

If you plan to get legally married in Thailand, you will need to spend at least 3 days in Bangkok doing errands around your country's embassy. Some of the required documents are:

  1. Affirmation of Freedom to Marry. In case you haven't been married before, you will need to present just your passport. And, if you have, you will need to present documents attesting to the legal termination of the previous marriage.
  2. A translation of the Affirmation of Freedom to Marry. For this, you will have to take the aforementioned document to the Ministry of Foreign Affairs and ask for its translation. Subsequently, you must make sure that it's legalized by the Thai government.
  3. Registration of the marriage at the Amphur. The Amphur is the office where marriages are officially recorded in Thailand, and this is the part that you get married paper-wise. Please, note that the marriage certification is issued in Thai, thus you will have to pay something extra for its translation.
  4. Certification of the marriage issued by the Ministry of Foreign Affairs.
  5. Report of your marriage to your home country. To conclude your marriage legalities, you will have to take your documents to your country's embassy.

Another thing to keep in mind is, that you can take care of all the above matters by yourself, or you can simply hire a wedding planner. Of course, you can also do all the paperwork at your home country and perform a token ceremony at Thailand - it's up to you.

How to persuade your relatives to follow you in Koh Samui - if your home country is far away

So, you have decided to arrange your wedding in Koh Samui, and now you are thinking about the best way to persuade relatives and friends to follow you. First thing to do is to inform them at least six months before the wedding. Six months might sound a bit far-fetched to some of you, however, in order to ensure that all your friends will have the budget to go to such a faraway journey, it's a crucial step. After all, you can use all this time to make sure that everything will work out perfectly in the end.

Another important part is to arrange the flights or accommodation for them, or, if you can't afford such an expense, you can try to get a hotel to offer you and your guests a better rate, as they tend to create better deals for large groups. Create a schedule of activities and things to do together, but don't bind them to always follow you. Alternatively, you could cover their dinner expenses, as Koh Samui is pretty inexpensive.
