What to eat in Algarve, Portugal

Local Delicacies

Algarve is a summer paradise, famous for its gastronomic seafood recipes influenced by a twist of the Mediterranean cuisine. Every region of Portugal has its own unique dishes and Algarve could not but be one of them as it is one of the biggest destinations for food travelers. If you are a carnivorous traveler don't be discouraged as Algarve is not just about seafood, even though the main recipes do revolve around fish ingredients. The must-try dishes in Algarve include:

Conquilhas à Algarvia

Conquilhas a Algarviais is one of the signature dishes of Algarve. It  is made from juicy clams fried with onions, garlic and sliced Portuguese sausage and garnished with parsley or coriander.

Cataplana de Marisco

Cataplana de Marisco is a traditional Portuguese dish that comprises of a combination of seafood such as prawns, clams, mussels, and whatever else is fresh that day! It is cooked in a device called a Cataplana and then lightly fried to provide a unique and aromatic dish.

Piri-Piri Chicken

It's not exactly clear where Piri Piri Chicken originated from, but Algarve is famous for it. Piri Piri chicken is made from a marinated chicken that has ingredients like garlic, olive oil, salt, lemon juice and Piri Piri chilies, that is normally cooked over a coal BBQ or oven and served with salad or rice and chips.

Fresh Fish

Cod is the most common fish to eat in Algarve but other popular dishes include octopus, squid, lobster, shrimp, prawns, mackerel and mussels. A popular codfish dish is called "Pasteis de bacalhau" and roughly translates to codfish pastels. This dish is made from fried eggs, shredded codfish, onion and parsley.

Best Restaurants

The restaurants and local eateries provide you with top quality service and dishes. Be aware that on Mondays there are generally no fresh catches when it comes to seafood so choose a meat dish instead. Beyond that the seafood is annually prepared with fresh, honest and top condition ingredients!

Faro is the capital city of Algarve and many great restaurants and eateries can be found there. Here are a few of our favorite restaurants!

The Ocean

If you are looking to splurge and go on a flavor adventure, look no further than this two Michelin Star restaurant, the Ocean. After working for two years at another Michelin Star restaurant, Rui Sequiera decided to take his love for cooking to another level. The menu at this restaurant is Portuguese inspired but makes use of fresh local products such as carrots and beans. Make sure to try to excellent quality seafood dishes here!

São Gabriel

This restaurant is another Michelin-starred winner as well as the champion of the 2015 nationwide Garfo de Platina award! This modern and contemporary establishment features two special menus, one gourmet and one special "degustation" menu. What may be even more impressive than the stunning and delicious dishes is the exceptional service!

A Eira do Mel

A Eira do Mel is located around 10km north of the small town of Sagres lies Vila do Bispo. Even though it is a Michelin starred restaurant, it still has a humble and welcoming atmosphere that will leave you pleasantly surprised. Here, you can taste traditional Portuguese cuisines such as rabbits and wild boar, along with a strange selection of international meats and seafood.
