Love is such a beautiful thing. It is, without a doubt, one of the most significant forces on earth. No matter how hard we try to hold on to a memory, it can only last for so long. The best we can do is to attempt to make that memory as eventful as possible so that in years to come when we look back, the vibrancy of the memory will keep drawing us back.

For an occasion such as a proposal, the place where the event occurs is vital. The place where you choose to propose must not only be romantic; it should hold some significance for both of you. The memory you create there is one that should stay with you well into your old age, and even beyond.

In this list I’ve made of the most romantic places to propose, I understand how individual preferences can come into play, so I've made them as diverse as possible. As you consider popping the big question, I am sure one of these locations will definitely appeal to you.

#1 Paris, France

I expect that you'd be sorely disappointed if I did not begin with Paris because it is impossible to discuss the subject of love and romance without mentioning the romance capital of the world. Apart from the famed historical significance, Paris has for lovers, it is one of the most beautiful places to propose.

The Eiffel Tower, located smack in the middle of Paris, is an ideal location to propose. You can try to keep it simple by just proposing at the Eiffel tower without a lot of fanfare. However, you could also decide to go the extra mile, book a room at the four seasons, making sure that it gives you a view of the Eiffel tower, order some romantic dinner for two, and propose afterwards. Whichever you choose, just make sure the Eiffel tower features prominently in the process.

#2 Huvafen Fushi, Maldives

If you are both beach lovers then this location will work perfectly for you. The Maldives is known for luxury and romance, and this picturesque beach, located in North Male, captures all of the charms of Maldives.

Whether you want to propose at night or in the day, the beauty of Huvafen Fushi is not diminished by the time of day it is. If you take your time to plan properly, you will find a plan that suits your preferences.

The bliss and serenity offered by the beach make a candlelight dinner proposal quite appealing. You may want to consider that option.

#3 Cliffs of Moher, Scotland

If you want to propose to your partner, with the vast expanse of the sea looking on and bearing witness to your confessions of love, then the cliffs of Moher is the ideal location for you. On any given day, you will be greeted with lush rolling hills, beautiful beaches and quaint villages.

The cliffs of Moher are located in Northern Ireland and span an impressive 8km, with the height reaching as far as 214m. No doubt it is one of the most attractive tourist sites in all of Ireland, so you'd expect that on a given day that it’d be teeming with tourists. However, you could decide to pop the question early in the morning, making sure you can be assured of some peace and quiet while you carry out this deeply private ceremony.

#4 Neuschwanstein Castle, Bavaria, Germany

The Neuschwanstein Castle is reminiscent of the fairy tale stories (and the beautiful love stories that come with them) that every single person must have heard during their childhood. If you are attempting to recreate any childhood fantasy involving proposals in castles, this location might be your best shot at it.

The castle is located in Hohenschwangau and is bordered on all sides by dense forest. It offers really great hiking trails, an option you might want to explore with your partner. You can propose during the hike, with the view of the castle in the background. Alternatively, you can decide to walk to the Marienbrucke Bridge, which offers the most striking view of the castle. There, you can propose.

#5 Barcelona, Spain

In Barcelona, you cannot run out of proposal ideas. The breathtaking architecture, combined with the vibrant culture in the city, provides endless material to make your proposal. The people are also quite hospitable and welcoming, and you can be sure that bystanders would clap and cheer, giving you the morale boost that you need, as opposed to just standing to gawk.

If you are planning to have your proposal at this location, there are a few ideal places to check out, which include, but are not limited to Parc Guell, Sagrada Familia and the Magic Fountain of Montjuic.

#6 Verona, Italy

Specifically, Juliet’s balcony in Verona.

I agree, this is me doing one for the romantics yet again. (But I deserve a pass because if a proposal is not the most romantic affair ever, what is?)

You can be sure that making a proposal at the home of the most beautiful love story ever told will undoubtedly communicate to your partner the weight of your love for them. Juliet’s house is known as Casa di Giulietta and has the balcony where she made the famous cry for Romeo. Of course, we know that the story is mostly fiction (Shakespeare never even set foot in Verona throughout his lifetime); however, the sentimental value the house holds, outweighs whatever factual basis it may lack. The house, which was purchased by the city and dubbed the home of the Capuleti family, is so famous for lovers that it has been dubbed the “essential love pilgrimage”.

You can plan a trip to Verona, and obtain permission to visit the residence. I'm sure that while you are there, you will definitely find an amazing opportunity to ask the big question.

#7 Amazon Cruise, Peru

Nothing beats having a proposal while on a cruise of the world’s second-largest river. It would make the ideal proposal site for your partner, especially if they are wildlife lovers. The Amazon stretches for miles, snaking its way through Brazil, Colombia and Peru. On a cruise of the river, you will get to meet a third of the world’s animal species. Popping the question as you sail down the river might be one of the most romantic gestures you could ever make, although, for your audience, you would have caimans, jaguars, manatees and tamarin monkeys (As far as audiences go, that isn't so bad.)

Finally, as you must come to learn about life, nothing is promised, nothing is a given. It is for this reason that we have to commemorate each spectacular time in our lives. Choosing to spend the rest of your life with someone is a huge step. The moment and place you decide to ask the person are also significant. Make it count. These locations will bring you closer to achieving that.
